Namibian solar power: Impressive 2024 Install at Groot Aub

In the Groot Aub settlement, just 56 kilometres from Namibia’s capital, a grassroots solar initiative is spotlighting the nation’s burgeoning renewable energy landscape. Magdalena Ndivayele, an enterprising University of Namibia student, has taken decisive action against persistent power infrastructure delays by equipping her local shop with a solar energy system.

A Grassroots Solution Enabled by Namibian solar power: Impressive 2024 Install at Groot Aub

For years, residents and business owners in Groot Aub have operated without a connection to the national grid, despite ongoing promises from the City of Windhoek. For Ndivayele, who runs a small local store known as a “cuca shop,” this lack of reliable electricity severely limited operating hours and posed significant safety challenges after dark. Rather than wait indefinitely, she invested in a solar solution, transforming her business and enhancing community safety in her immediate area.

The installation provides more than just light; it has turned her shop into a reliable community hub where locals can gather and charge devices. This single act of resilience demonstrates the power of decentralized energy to foster local economic development and social progress, reflecting a broader trend of Namibians turning to renewables.

Groot Aub: Showcasing Namibian solar power adoption

Ndivayele’s project is not an isolated event but part of a larger pattern of solar integration in and around the region. Her initiative complements other key projects, such as the solar-powered telecommunications tower deployed by AFCHIX to bring essential internet connectivity to the settlement. Furthermore, the nearby Namibia University of Science and Technology (NUST) Solar Power Plant Living Lab serves as an important regional model, showcasing how solar technology can empower off-grid communities and stimulate sustainable entrepreneurship.

These local efforts are mirrored by massive growth in the national energy sector. In 2024, the industry saw significant foreign investment, highlighted by UK-based Solarcentury Africa’s partnership on a US$19 million, 19.3 MWp grid-connected solar plant. From an individual student’s shop to utility-scale power plants, solar energy is proving to be a transformative force across Namibia, addressing energy poverty and paving the way for a sustainable future.
