In the face of persistent infrastructure challenges, one Namibian student has taken power into her own hands—literally. Magdalena Ndivayele, a student at the University of Namibia and a determined entrepreneur, has illuminated her community by installing a solar power system at her local shop in the Groot Aub settlement.

Groot Aub, located just 56 kilometres south of the nation’s capital, Windhoek, has long awaited a connection to the national electricity grid. Despite repeated promises from the City of Windhoek, residents and business owners like Magdalena have had to operate without a reliable power source. For a small business, this limitation hampers growth, restricts operating hours, and poses significant safety concerns after sunset.
Magdalena runs a “cuca shop,” a term for a small, often informal, local store that is a cornerstone of many Namibian communities. Faced with the ongoing delays in electrification, she decided to seek an alternative and sustainable solution.
