Bauchi Communities Lauds WaterAid For Solar-Powered Boreholes

Residents in the Misau local government area of Bauchi state are expressing profound gratitude for a new initiative by WaterAid Nigeria and its partners to install solar-powered water systems and sanitation facilities. The project, officially titled the “Increasing Access to Sustainable Climate-Resilient WASH for Women Project” and financially backed by DP World, aims to transform public health by delivering reliable and climate-resilient water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) infrastructure.

Targeting Sustainable Solutions as Bauchi Communities Lauds WaterAid For Solar-Powered Boreholes

Launched with a groundbreaking ceremony around May 8, 2024, the comprehensive project is set to directly benefit over 15,000 people, with a particular focus on empowering women and girls who often bear the burden of traveling long distances for water. The core of the intervention includes the construction of three new solar-powered boreholes and a modern sanitation facility in public spaces across selected communities like Rugar Jeji and Hardawa. This effort directly addresses a critical need in Bauchi, where only 19% of the population has access to safely managed sanitation services.

To ensure the long-term success of the installations, the project incorporates a strong sustainability model. Local artisans will receive specialized training to handle maintenance and repairs, while community-based WASH committees will be established and trained to oversee the effective operation and management of the new facilities.

Relief and Gratitude from Community Leaders

The initiative has been warmly received by local communities long plagued by water scarcity. Garba Iliyasu, the District Head of Hardawa Community, voiced his support during the foundation-laying event. “Today marks a joyous occasion for us as we have eagerly awaited this type of intervention,” he stated. “Water is indispensable for human existence, and its scarcity can lead to significant hardships. This project will bring positive changes to the lives of people in these communities.”

This sentiment was echoed by residents like Zainab Umar and Umar Isma’il from the Rugar Jeji community. They recounted the daily struggle of trekking to a distant river that often runs dry, forcing them to collect water from the few available wells late at night when water levels rise. “We encounter numerous obstacles in accessing water,” they explained. “The construction of this water project brings us joy as it will alleviate our struggles in obtaining water.”

A Strategic Focus on Women and Community Health

Evelyn Mere, Country Director of WaterAid Nigeria, emphasized the project’s alignment with broader development goals. As highlighted by the Daily Independent, the initiative is designed to transform the lives of women and girls by reducing their water collection burdens and involving them in WASH decision-making processes. Speaking through a representative, she outlined ambitious targets for the next three years: “Our goal is to provide approximately 15,000 individuals with access to basic water supply services, deliver hygiene behavior change interventions to 4,000 people, and provide basic sanitation services to 1,000 individuals.”

A Growing Trend in Nigeria’s Water Sector

The WaterAid project in Bauchi is part of a larger national movement toward adopting renewable energy for essential services. In a separate development, Fordmarx Nigeria Ltd. announced its commitment to donate 37 solar-powered boreholes, one for each state and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). The company’s CEO, Oforbuike Clifford Nnaji, pointed to his firm’s existing work in installing solar water and irrigation systems, particularly in Enugu State, as a blueprint for improving health and economic conditions nationwide. These collective efforts highlight a strategic pivot towards sustainable solar power to solve Nigeria’s pressing water challenges.
