Nigeria in Dire Need of Solar Power Solutions
At the unveiling of the FusionSolar smart solar products in Kano, Ni Zhilin, director of Huawei Digital Power Nigeria, emphasized that renewable energy is the most sustainable and intelligent option for Nigeria, noting its growing importance as a primary energy source worldwide.
Acknowledging Nigeria’s status as the primary importer of generators, Zhilin highlighted the urgent need for solar energy solutions amid recent hikes in electricity tariffs and diesel prices, which surged from N280 per litre in 2022 to N1300 in 2024, Leadership News reported.
He stressed the unsustainability of the current approach and advocated for a shift toward solar energy.
Echoing this sentiment, Mohammed Bello Umar, Chairman of the Manufacturing Association of Nigeria (MAN) for the Bompai/Jigawa Branch, expressed concern over the impact of energy challenges on the country’s manufacturing sector.
The chairman explained that rising or unstable energy costs drive up production expenses and, ultimately, the price of goods. He also cited operational disruptions, supply chain issues, reduced market competitiveness, and limited investment opportunities as further consequences of the sector’s energy challenges.
“To overcome these challenges, it is essential to employ a combination of strategies, including investing in energy-efficient technologies, diversifying energy sources, optimizing energy supply chains for reliability, and advocating for supportive energy policies,” he emphasized.
MAN Collaborates With Huawei
Discussing MAN’s initiatives for sustainable energy, Mr. Oweh Mba-Sam, the Acting Managing Director of Manufacturers Power Development Co. Ltd, highlighted the association’s collaboration with Huawei to address energy challenges with smart solar solutions.
He explained that MAN chose to partner with Huawei because it is the world’s largest exporter of PV inverters and battery storage systems, ensuring efficient delivery and cost savings.
Mr. Mba-Sam praised Huawei as a reliable brand with seamless sales and installation processes, adding that its capable project development partners and dedicated operational and maintenance services instill confidence in customers.
Jeremiah Ejiroghene Aminode, Solution Manager for Huawei Digital Power Nigeria, revealed that Huawei’s smart solar products are currently powering more than 2.7 million households globally. He highlighted that Huawei’s smart inverters and batteries come with 5- to 10-year warranties, offering capacities as high as 2MWh for industrial and commercial applications and as low as 5KWh for residential use.
Huawei’s Role in Nigeria’s Largest Solar Farm
Speaking on the advantages of Huawei solar products, he stated, “They are aesthetically pleasing, incredibly safe and reliable, and have 24/7 after-sales assurance.”
To ensure efficient product deployment, Huawei supports installer training and certification through on-site and online courses, technical support, and certification exams.
At the event, Nick Lusson introduced Huawei’s Power-S, a modular power backup solution, highlighting its seamless functionality and easy maintenance. The system allows for quick switching between energy sources and integrates new and old batteries without performance loss. Its modular design and pre-integrated cables streamline installation, saving time and effort.
Huawei Smart PV has contributed to significant projects, including the Abuja Steel PV plant developed by Paras Energy—Nigeria’s largest solar farm providing eco-friendly electricity to the steel industry. Huawei’s technology also played a key role in the World’s Largest Micro-grid BESS Project in the Red Sea, Saudi Arabia. This grid features a capacity of 400MW PV + 1300MWh BESS and operates entirely on renewable energy.
By launching its smart solar solutions in Kano, Huawei is helping address Nigeria’s energy challenges and enhance its industrial competitiveness. This initiative demonstrates a strong commitment to developing renewable energy infrastructure and promoting sustainable solutions in the region.
