Montenegro solar plant: Impressive 100 MW Project Advances

Montenegro is solidifying its commitment to renewable energy, with several significant solar power projects advancing that are poised to dramatically increase the nation’s green energy capacity. Among these is a notable 100 MW solar facility being developed by Unipan Green DOO on the site of the former Kombinat Aluminijuma Podgorica (KAP). This project, valued at tens of millions of euros, has already received government approval, signaling strong official support for utility-scale solar development.

A Growing Portfolio of Renewable Investments

The 100 MW Unipan Green project is a cornerstone of a much broader national strategy to harness solar power. The country’s development pipeline showcases a diverse and ambitious range of initiatives. A significant milestone was recently achieved for the 70 MW Tupan solar facility, which secured a critical grid connection contract with the state power utility, CGES. This agreement is a key step toward integrating the plant into the national transmission network and bolstering domestic energy security.

Further demonstrating the scale of Montenegro’s ambitions is the planned 186.1 MW Rudine Solar PV Project in Niksic. This large-scale development, set to span 131 hectares, is expected to commence construction in 2026 with a target for commercial operation by 2028. Additionally, a major partnership between UGT Renewables and the state utility EPCG is set to deliver approximately 200 MW of solar capacity, complemented by a 50 MW/100 MWh battery energy storage system to ensure grid stability.

Surpassing National Capacity Milestones

These collective efforts are rapidly transforming Montenegro’s energy landscape. The country’s installed photovoltaic capacity currently stands at around 80 MW. However, with the pipeline of projects moving forward, this figure is projected to surge past 100 MW by the end of 2026. Each new project approval and grid connection agreement brings Montenegro closer to its long-term goals for energy independence and a sustainable, decarbonized power sector, positioning it as a key player in the regional green transition.
