Spain solar complex: Axpo’s Unique Vilecha Opens, 50 MW in León

Swiss energy leader Axpo has officially celebrated the launch of its Vilecha solar complex, a landmark 200 megawatt peak (MWp) facility in Spain that reinforces the nation’s role in Europe’s renewable energy landscape. While the formal inauguration took place on May 7, 2026, the plant has been successfully delivering clean power to Spain’s national grid since the first quarter of 2026.

Anatomy of the Spain Solar Complex

Located in the province of León across the municipalities of Villadangos del Páramo and Cimanes de Tejar, the Vilecha complex is a masterclass in scale and efficiency. The project is not a single entity but a cluster of four distinct 50 MWp photovoltaic plants named Valtarafon, Roteles, El Monte, and La Fenera. These co-developed plants share a single grid connection point, optimizing the use of infrastructure.

Spanning an impressive area of over 360 hectares, the site is equipped with more than 365,000 tracking-mounted solar panels designed to follow the sun’s path and maximize energy capture. Construction on this significant project was completed in November 2025, positioning it as the largest solar facility in Axpo’s growing portfolio.

Powering Spain’s Green Transition

The Vilecha solar complex is engineered to generate a substantial output of over 377 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of renewable electricity each year. This volume of clean energy is sufficient to meet the average annual electricity demands of approximately 100,000 people, making a tangible contribution to reducing carbon emissions.

The successful operation of the Vilecha plants underscores Axpo’s strategic expansion in the European solar market and aligns with Spain’s ambitious national goals for a sustainable energy future. By transforming the abundant sunlight of the Iberian Peninsula into reliable power, this complex stands as a powerful example of progress in the global shift towards clean energy.
