Spain solar complex: Vilecha Inaugurated by Axpo
In a significant stride for renewable energy in Europe, Swiss energy company Axpo officially inaugurated its Vilecha solar complex in Spain on May 7, 2026. This large-scale facility marks a major milestone for both Axpo and Spain’s ambitious green energy transition, solidifying the nation’s position as a key player in solar power generation.
A Landmark Project in North-Western Spain
Located in the province of León, within the municipalities of Villadangos del Páramo and Cimanes de Tejar, the Vilecha complex is now the largest solar facility in the Axpo Group’s portfolio. The project is a testament to efficient design and large-scale renewable development.
The complex boasts a total capacity of 200 megawatts peak (MWp). This impressive output is generated by four distinct photovoltaic (PV) plants, each with a 50 MWp capacity. Developed and constructed simultaneously across a sprawling 310-hectare area, the four plants share a common grid connection point, optimizing efficiency and infrastructure.
While the official inauguration ceremony took place in May, the Vilecha solar complex has been operational since February 2026, successfully feeding clean electricity into Spain’s national grid.
Powering a Sustainable Future
The impact of the Vilecha complex on the region’s energy supply is substantial. The facility is projected to generate over 377 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of renewable electricity annually. To put this figure into perspective, this is enough clean energy to meet the average annual consumption of approximately 100,000 people.
The successful completion and operation of the Vilecha project underscore Axpo’s commitment to expanding its renewable energy footprint across Europe. For Spain, it represents another concrete step towards achieving its national renewable energy targets and reducing its carbon footprint. By harnessing the abundant solar resources of the Iberian Peninsula, projects like Vilecha are crucial for building a more sustainable and energy-independent future.
As detailed in Axpo’s official press release, the inauguration celebrates a powerful collaboration and a shared vision for a cleaner energy landscape. The Vilecha solar complex stands as a shining example of how international partnership and technological innovation can accelerate the global transition to renewable power.
