Impressive 550 MW Solar Plant Fuels Jordan green ammonia project
Jordan is poised to become a significant player in the global clean fuel market following the government’s approval of a landmark $1 billion green ammonia project. This pioneering initiative, the nation’s first utility-scale venture of its kind, will be situated in the Aqaba Special Economic Zone (ASEZ) and is designed to establish Jordan as a key exporter of green energy.
Achieving a Self-Sufficient Green Energy Hub with Impressive 550 MW Solar Plant Fuels Jordan green ammonia project
The project’s architecture is a masterclass in integrated renewable energy systems. At its core is a massive 550-megawatt (MW) solar power plant, which will be constructed in Wadi Araba. This facility will operate entirely off-grid, ensuring that its substantial power demands do not impact Jordan’s national electricity supply. To guarantee uninterrupted, 24/7 production at the ammonia facility, the solar installation will be paired with a robust 500 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS). This allows for solar power generated during daylight hours to be stored and utilized overnight.
Connecting the power source to the production facility will be a new 52-kilometer transmission line, delivering dedicated clean electricity from the desert to the industrial complex in Aqaba. This integrated infrastructure will power the electrolysis process required to produce an estimated 100,000 tonnes of green ammonia annually, a highly sought-after commodity for carbon-free fertilizers, shipping fuel, and hydrogen transport.
Strategic Development and Timeline
The development is being managed by Jordan Green Ammonia (JGA), a consortium formed through a partnership between the UAE-based 7Fidelity Group and Poland’s Hynfra. The investment deal received formal backing from Jordan’s Council of Ministers on May 12, 2026, a move hailed by the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources as a “strategic milestone” in the country’s energy transition.
The project is on a clear path to execution, with developers targeting a financial close by September 2027. Following the construction phase, commercial operations are slated to commence by November 2030. By capitalizing on its abundant solar resources, Jordan is not only advancing its own decarbonization goals but is also strategically positioning itself as a vital hub in the future of the global green energy economy.
