Unveiling the Impressive Malaysia solar BESS project: 36 MWp Deal
Malaysia is advancing its renewable energy ambitions with a significant new project in Sepang, located adjacent to the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA). A subsidiary of leading renewable energy firm Cypark Resources Berhad is developing a 36 megawatt-peak (MWp) solar photovoltaic (PV) plant, which will be critically enhanced by an integrated 10 megawatt / 40 megawatt-hour (MWh) Battery Energy Storage System (BESS). This initiative marks a major step toward modernizing the country’s energy infrastructure.
To ensure the project meets the highest international standards, the Swedish-based global engineering and advisory company AFRY has been appointed as the Owner’s Engineer. In this crucial capacity, AFRY will represent the project owner’s interests throughout the entire development lifecycle. Their comprehensive oversight will span from detailed design reviews and technical consultancy to on-site construction supervision and final commissioning, guaranteeing adherence to quality, safety, and performance benchmarks.
Enhancing Grid Stability with this 36MWp Solar BESS Deal
The strategic integration of a large-scale BESS is what sets this project apart, directly addressing the challenge of solar power’s intermittency. The battery system is designed to store excess solar energy generated during peak daylight hours. This stored power can then be dispatched to the grid when demand is high or solar generation is unavailable, such as during evenings or overcast conditions. This capability is vital for providing grid stability, improving energy reliability, and supporting Malaysia’s transition to a more resilient and sustainable power system.
This forward-thinking project, a collaboration involving entities like Cenergi SEA and KLIA Aeropolis, demonstrates a strong commitment to innovative energy solutions. As highlighted in industry reports, AFRY’s involvement underscores the technical complexity and importance of the facility. The Sepang plant is poised to become a benchmark for future solar-plus-storage developments in the region, paving the way for a cleaner energy future for Malaysia.
