Bangladesh solar power target: Remarkable 5,000 MW by 2029

Bangladesh Targets 5,000 MW of Solar Power in Five Years

DHAKA, BANGLADESH – The government of Bangladesh has announced an ambitious new target to generate 5,000 megawatts (MW) of electricity from solar power within the next five years, signaling a significant push to expand its renewable energy portfolio.

The announcement was made by Iqbal Hassan Mahmood Tuku, the Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources. To kickstart the initiative, the minister has issued immediate instructions for solar panels to be installed at all deputy commissioner (DC) offices across the country within the next three months.

This new five-year plan aims to accelerate the nation’s transition to clean energy and address the gap between approved projects and operational capacity. According to official data, while approximately 1,700 MW of solar projects have received approval, less than 200 MW have successfully reached their commercial operation date (COD). This highlights a substantial implementation challenge that the new directive seeks to overcome.

Achieving the 5,000 MW goal will require a multi-faceted approach, leveraging various deployment strategies from large-scale solar farms to distributed generation. The government’s focus on installing panels on its own buildings serves as a visible first step and a model for public and private sector adoption, including the essential expansion of rooftop solar installations that has been urged by industry advocates.

This target represents a critical component of the country’s long-term energy strategy. It aligns with broader national goals to increase the share of renewables in the energy mix, complementing other efforts like the nation’s remarkable 10,000 MW solar plan for 2030. Successfully bridging the gap between project approvals and grid-connected power will be the key metric for success over the coming years as Bangladesh works to secure a cleaner, more sustainable energy future.
