Montenegro to Boost Renewable Energy via Trans-Balkan Electricity Corridor
PODGORICA, Montenegro – Montenegro is on the verge of completing its section of the Trans-Balkan Electricity Corridor, a critical infrastructure project set to unlock the nation’s significant renewable energy potential and bolster regional energy security.
The high-voltage transmission line is a cornerstone of the country’s energy strategy, which, according to regional reports, relies heavily on the development of new renewable energy sources. With the Montenegrin section of the corridor nearing completion, the country is better positioning itself to integrate future large-scale wind and solar projects into its grid and facilitate electricity exports to neighboring markets.
This grid enhancement is vital as the country advances several Impressive Montenegro power projects. By strengthening its transmission backbone, Montenegro aims to ensure that future generation can be reliably delivered, reducing the risk of curtailment and maximizing the value of its clean energy investments.
However, the path to scaling up renewables is not without obstacles. In a notable setback, the country’s Ministry of Ecology, Sustainable Development and Northern Development recently annulled the environmental approval for the planned 118.8 MW Bijela wind park. This development underscores the persistent regulatory and permitting challenges that can affect major energy projects, even as strategic infrastructure moves forward.
