Norway’s Buildings Hold Massive Untapped Solar Potential of 31 GW

OSLO, NORWAY – A recent analysis has uncovered a vast and largely untapped renewable energy resource in Norway, revealing that the nation’s existing buildings could host approximately 31 gigawatts (GW) of solar photovoltaic (PV) capacity. This finding suggests a monumental opportunity for Norway to scale up its domestic clean energy generation by leveraging its built environment.

The potential capacity, identified primarily on the rooftops and façades of residential, commercial, and industrial buildings, represents a dramatic increase over the country’s current installed solar base. If realized, this distributed generation network could materially reshape Norway’s energy landscape, which is traditionally dominated by hydropower.

To put the 31 GW figure in perspective, it is more than three times the size of the ambitious “Desert to Power” initiative in Africa’s Sahel region, which aims to create one of the world’s largest solar zones with 10 GW of capacity. Domestically, this building-integrated potential dwarfs even the most significant utility-scale developments, such as the Impressive Norway solar project: 500 MW Plan Advances currently in planning stages.

Harnessing this potential could offer significant benefits beyond raw power generation. Widespread deployment of rooftop solar, particularly when paired with energy storage and smart demand-management systems, could help alleviate pressure on the national grid. However, integrating such a vast amount of intermittent power would pose a considerable challenge, reinforcing the importance of strategic infrastructure investments like the recently announced Norway grid upgrade: Impressive €174M investment essential.

Despite the promising outlook, the analysis acknowledges several key constraints inherent to a Nordic climate. The main hurdles include reduced sunlight during winter months, the physical suitability of existing roofs, seasonal snow cover that can obscure panels, and the capacity of local grids to handle new connections.

Nevertheless, the report underscores that buildings alone could support a major expansion of solar energy in Norway. As the country’s energy needs grow, driven by electrification and the expansion of digital infrastructure like the Norway data center: T1 Energy’s Stunning 2024 Expansion, tapping into this distributed solar resource will be a critical pathway toward achieving a more resilient and sustainable energy future.
