Papua New Guinea Prioritizes Solar in Clean Energy Shift, PM Says

PORT MORESBY, Papua New Guinea – Papua New Guinea is preparing to make a decisive move towards a low-carbon future, with solar power identified as a key pillar in a broad strategy to embrace clean energy and reduce fossil fuel dependency, Prime Minister James Marape has announced.

Speaking to delegates at the 6th Pacific Regional Energy and Transport Ministers’ Meeting in Port Moresby, Prime Minister Marape outlined a vision for a national energy transition powered by greater investment in a diverse renewable portfolio. He specifically highlighted plans to develop the nation’s hydro, geothermal, solar, wind, and ocean energy resources.

The push is driven by a multi-faceted strategy aimed at cutting carbon emissions, lessening the country’s reliance on imported fossil fuels, and ultimately strengthening its long-term energy security. This national ambition aligns with smaller-scale projects already demonstrating the tangible benefits of renewables, such as recent efforts where solar power has been used to boost school infrastructure and provide reliable electricity for communities.

Prime Minister Marape framed the initiative as part of a wider regional effort among Pacific nations to accelerate the adoption of renewable energy, modernize transport systems, and improve overall resilience against external economic and environmental shocks.

Beyond stationary power generation, the government’s clean energy agenda also extends to the transport sector. The Prime Minister revealed that a national policy to support the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) will be announced soon. Furthermore, the country is actively exploring the potential for electric maritime transport, a critical step for an island nation.

This comprehensive approach underscores a growing momentum across the Pacific to build sustainable economies. Initiatives like the recent partnership to bring solar lights to homes in New Ireland showcase the grassroots impact that complements the government’s high-level policy direction, signaling a unified push towards a cleaner, more independent energy future for Papua New Guinea and the broader region.
