PNG solar power medical: Unique System Delivers Supplies

PNG Village Benefits from Solar Power System and Medical Supplies

In a landmark development for a remote community in Papua New Guinea, the village of Dorobisoro has received a life-changing installation of a solar power system and a fresh delivery of medical supplies. For the first time since its establishment in the 1980s, the local aid post is now illuminated, marking a new era of hope and improved healthcare for the thousands of people it serves.

A Light in the Darkness After 46 Years

Located at the foot of Mt. Obree, the Dorobisoro aid post has been a vital, yet under-resourced, lifeline for the region. For decades, it operated without electricity or a reliable water source. The community has been served by the dedication of health worker Kauka Sibide, who has worked at the post since 1986 under these challenging conditions. Treating patients and handling emergencies in the dark was a persistent reality.

That reality has now changed. As reported by EMTV, lights were switched on inside the aid post for the first time in 46 years, a moment of profound significance celebrated by the entire village.

The Ghost Mountain Expedition Project

This transformative project was spearheaded by the Ghost Mountain Expedition Project. According to reports from PNG Haus Bung, trekkers, including Australian fundraiser Gamgee from Mapleton, Queensland, were instrumental in bringing this initiative to life. After an expedition through the area highlighted the pressing needs of the community, a fundraising effort was launched.

With the crucial support of the PNG Tribal Foundation and generous Australian donors, the project successfully delivered not only solar power equipment and medical supplies but also a Starlink system for internet connectivity.

Immediate and Lasting Impact

The installation of solar power brings immediate, tangible benefits. Elizah Lofulo, a new health worker at the post, noted the significant improvement in the ability to provide services. With reliable lighting, medical staff can now treat patients safely at any hour.

Furthermore, the internet connection establishes a critical communication link to Port Moresby, enabling staff to consult on emergencies and coordinate advanced care—a vital service for such an isolated area. This initiative stands as a powerful, positive step forward, particularly when viewed against the backdrop of the substantial healthcare struggles faced by many remote communities in PNG, where access to treatment can be a significant challenge.

The arrival of the equipment and the subsequent “switching on” of the lights was met with celebration and strong community support, marking a historic milestone for Dorobisoro. This project is a testament to what can be achieved through collaboration, determination, and a focused effort to bring essential services to those who need them most.
