New Malawi solar power Plant to Enhance National Grid
Malawi’s new 10 MW solar plant in Salima is expected to provide a slight improvement to the country’s power supply when it starts feeding electricity into the national grid in June, according to the Electricity Generation Company (Egenco). The additional output from the solar facility is anticipated to help ease the ongoing power shortage in Malawi, where the national grid is currently under significant strain due to generation shortfalls.
Current Power Supply Situation
As it stands, Egenco supplies approximately 444 MW to the national grid, predominantly sourced from hydro power, alongside a smaller contribution from diesel and a minimal amount from solar energy. Despite the addition of the solar plant, experts indicate that the enhancement to the electricity supply will be limited, only offering a slight improvement to the current crisis.
Challenges Faced in Commissioning
The commissioning of the solar plant experienced delays attributed to foreign exchange shortages, which impacted payments to the contractor. Even with the plant’s additional capacity, analysts maintain that it will not completely resolve the broader power crisis faced by the nation. Continuous efforts will be necessary to mitigate the ongoing energy shortages affecting Malawian households and businesses.
Future Solar Projects
Further initiatives in Malawi’s solar energy sector include a separate project involving solar storage that is set to deliver an impressive 20 MW, expected for rollout in 2026. These projects aim to contribute to a more reliable energy infrastructure in the region as Malawi grapples with its electricity challenges.
