In a significant push towards renewable energy independence, Sungrow announced on May 21, 2024, a strategic partnership with Indian EPC leader Larsen & Toubro (L&T) to construct a landmark 760 MWh off-grid energy storage project in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. This collaboration is set to power the ambitious AMAALA luxury tourism destination with 100% renewable energy.
The project, being developed by EDF Group and Masdar for Red Sea Global, is a key component of Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030. It will feature a 160 MW/760 MWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) utilizing Sungrow’s advanced lithium-ion technology, designed for high energy density and long lifespans. Alongside the storage component, Sungrow will supply 165 MW of its state-of-the-art photovoltaic (PV) inverters, which are essential for converting solar-generated DC power into grid-usable AC power in large-scale solar power installations.
T. Madhava Das, Whole-Time Director & Senior Executive Vice President (Utilities) at L&T, expressed confidence in the partnership, referencing their successful prior collaboration on the NEOM New City project. This new venture at AMAALA further solidifies the relationship between the two companies.
Upon its scheduled completion in 2027, the facility is poised to become the world’s second-largest off-grid energy storage initiative. It will provide a continuous, 24/7 supply of clean energy to the vast 4,155-square-kilometer AMAALA development on the Red Sea coast. The project’s environmental impact is substantial, with projections indicating it will generate approximately 410 million kilowatt-hours of electricity annually while cutting carbon dioxide emissions by nearly 500,000 tons per year. Furthermore, the development is expected to create over 50,000 jobs and add more than 11 billion riyals to the nation’s GDP, demonstrating a powerful synergy between sustainability and economic growth.
