Saudi Arabia Solar Energy Initiatives Expansion
Saudi Arabia is expanding its solar energy initiatives through the National Renewable Energy Program, launching new utility-scale projects and ramping up private-sector investments aimed at quickly increasing renewable capacity.
The government recently initiated the Seventh Phase of the National Renewable Energy Program, which encompasses 5,300 MW of combined solar and wind projects, including ventures such as Tabarjal II, Mawqaq, Tathleeth, and South Al-Ula.
According to the Saudi Power Procurement Company (SPPC), the country plans to award approximately 14 GW of new renewable capacity in 2026 through upcoming tender rounds, indicating a significant acceleration in renewable project deployments.
Saudi Arabia’s renewable strategy, as outlined in its Vision 2030, targets the generation of up to 130 GW of renewable capacity by the end of the decade, with renewable energy expected to make up 70% of the nation’s power mix by that year.
In 2025, a collaboration involving ACWA Power, Badeel, and Saudi Aramco Power Company will invest approximately USD 8.3 billion to develop 15 GW of solar and wind capacity.
Recent activities in the sector also include the 2 GW Al Sadawi solar PV project, which Masdar and its partners secured financing for, and a 400 MW solar project awarded in As Sufun under a 25-year power purchase agreement (PPA).
To support its expanding solar infrastructure, the Ministry of Energy initiated a geographical survey program, establishing 1,200 solar and wind monitoring stations across the Kingdom. This effort will facilitate the identification and development of high-potential sites for future projects.
