Saudi Arabia Renewable Energy Goals and Objectives
Saudi Arabia aims for renewable sources to provide 50% of its electricity generation by 2030, with the remainder predominantly supplied by highly efficient gas-fired power plants. This target is part of the country’s broader energy strategy under Saudi Vision 2030.
Saudi Arabia Renewable Energy Capacity and Programs
To support this target, the Kingdom plans to develop more than 80 GW of renewable energy capacity through the National Renewable Energy Program. Simultaneously, the Liquid Fuel Displacement Program aims to replace over 1 million barrels of oil per day in domestic power consumption.
Saudi Arabia Renewable Energy Infrastructure Development
Saudi Arabia is focused on enhancing its electricity transmission and distribution infrastructure to accommodate varying solar and wind energy generation. In addition, the build-out of battery-storage capacity and the expansion of flexible gas generation systems is expected to bolster grid reliability as the deployment of renewable energy sources increases.
Saudi Arabia Renewable Energy Deals and Collaborations
The Kingdom has recently signed various energy memorandums of understanding, enhancing cooperation in renewable energy and grid interconnection with neighboring countries such as Kuwait, Qatar, and Egypt. These agreements are aimed at boosting energy security and supporting the transition to a more diversified energy mix.
Implications of Saudi Arabia Renewable Energy for National Strategy
This push towards renewable energy is integral to Saudi Arabia’s strategy to enhance energy security, curtail domestic oil consumption, and transition the electricity system towards a more sustainable model. The overall plan is aligned with international climate objectives and positions the Kingdom as a key player in the renewable energy sector.
