Louisiana Public Service Commission Approves 3GW Solar Expansion for Entergy

Entergy Louisiana has received approval from the Louisiana Public Service Commission to add up to 3 GW of solar power to its generation portfolio. This decision marks the largest renewable power expansion in the state’s history, significantly strengthening Louisiana’s commitment to economic and sustainable energy sources.

Entergy Louisiana’s Commitment to Sustainable Energy

Entergy Louisiana, LLC is a subsidiary of Entergy Corporation, a Fortune 500 company providing power to 3 million customers across Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Texas. The company is committed to enhancing the reliability and resilience of the energy system while guiding the transition to cleaner, more efficient energy solutions.

With a century-long presence in local communities, Entergy is renowned for its sustainability efforts and corporate citizenship. Since 2018, the company has contributed over $100 million annually in economic benefits through philanthropy, volunteerism, and advocacy. Headquartered in New Orleans, Louisiana, Entergy employs approximately 12,000 people.

Entergy Louisiana’s Historic Expansion Approval

This authorization simplifies the procurement and approval process, making it easier to develop multiple solar projects across Louisiana. The initiative will not only create jobs and increase tax revenues for local communities but also position the state to attract new industries and employment opportunities from companies prioritizing clean energy in their expansion strategies.

Phillip May, president and CEO of Entergy Louisiana, emphasized that this approval underscores the company’s dedication to meeting operational and sustainability goals while fostering economic growth and environmental stewardship. He described it as a major achievement for the state’s future and thanked all parties involved, including local officials and regulators, for their contributions to the proposal.

Entergy Solar Project Milestones

Entergy Louisiana already has approximately 230 megawatts of renewable resources, including the Capital Region Solar facility. This was the first utility-scale solar project approved by the Louisiana Public Service Commission and began delivering power to the grid in October 2020. The commission has also approved an additional 225 MW of renewable projects, bringing the company’s total solar portfolio to over 3,800 MW in various stages of development and approval.

Entergy Corporation’s Renewable Energy Goals

This approval marks a major milestone in Entergy Louisiana’s ongoing effort to modernize its power generation portfolio and provide cleaner, more efficient, and diverse energy solutions for its customers. It also aligns with Entergy Corporation’s plans to grow its renewable energy resources by 2031 and its commitment to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.

Adopting renewable power offers significant economic and environmental benefits. Solar energy, for example, can reduce greenhouse gas emissions, improve air quality, and create local jobs. Nearly 25% of Entergy Louisiana’s generation portfolio already comes from carbon-free resources, including nuclear and renewable technologies.

Entergy Louisiana’s long-term vision includes further investments in clean energy infrastructure, especially as utility-scale solar becomes more economical. That vision also encompasses energy efficiency programs and partnerships with local stakeholders to promote sustainability and resilience. This 3 GW expansion will bring its parent company, Entergy Corporation, closer to its target of 15-17 GW of installed capacity by the end of 2031.
