ADB Approves Financing for Cambodia Battery Storage Project
The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has approved a $63.44 million financing package to support the construction of a 250-megawatt/500-megawatt-hour battery energy storage system at the Takeo substation in Cambodia. This project aims to accelerate the integration of renewable energy into Cambodia’s power grid, enhance grid stability, and improve energy security, while also boosting cross-border power trade with Vietnam.
The facility will store excess renewable energy, primarily from solar sources, and dispatch it during peak demand to manage fluctuations, particularly benefiting the rapidly expanding industrial and urban zones in southern Cambodia. The project supports Cambodia’s target of achieving 70% renewable energy capacity by 2030 and is expected to avoid up to 27,700 tons of greenhouse gas emissions annually once operational.
Key features of the project include strengthening the capacity of Electricité du Cambodge (EDC), the state-owned utility, to manage advanced energy systems, and fostering battery energy storage regulations and skills development. The initiative also emphasizes increasing female participation in technical and leadership roles within the energy sector.
