Romania solar power record reaches 2048 MW, impacting market prices

Romania Solar Power Record Achieved with New Output Milestone

Romania set a new record for solar power output, reaching 2,048 MW at 11:39 a.m. on Friday. This information comes from Romanian media citing data from Transelectrica. The record output represented roughly one-third of the country’s instantaneous demand, which was just over 6,000 MW at the time.

The previous high of 1,866 MW was established on June 16, 2025. It is important to note that this figure does not include output from prosumers, and if those were accounted for, the total solar output could have been around 4,000 MW.

The record output was not sustained throughout the day, characteristic of shorter winter days.

Impact of Romania Solar Power Record on Electricity Market

The spike in solar generation contributed to a unique situation in the electricity market, driving day-ahead market prices into negative territory for the first time this year. This pricing anomaly was a direct result of the high solar output surpassing demand.

Overview of Current Solar Landscape in Romania’s Solar Power Record

Romania’s solar capacity has been on the rise. The country is expected to exceed 7 GW of installed solar capacity in early 2026. Recent developments indicate a growing momentum in solar energy investment, driven partly by EU support and a significant number of commercial and residential solar consumers.

Future Prospects for Romania Solar Power Record Expansion

With solar power meeting a larger share of Romania’s energy demand, stakeholders are focusing on expanding solar capacity further, with 36 planned initiatives projected to contribute 2,050 MW of additional capacity.
