New Peru Solar Projects Announced
Peru’s Ministry of Energy and Mines (MINEM) has announced plans to add nine new solar projects by 2028, which will increase the country’s installed capacity by 1,420 megawatts (MW). These developments are expected to attract an investment of approximately US$1.26 billion.
Details of Peru Solar Projects
The planned projects will primarily connect to the National Interconnected Electric System (SEIN), with a concentration in the regions of Arequipa and Moquegua. Among the named initiatives are the Sunny II Solar Park, San José Solar Plant, Solimana, and Hanaqpampa.
Broader Goals for Peru Solar Projects Capacity
In addition to the nine projects, Peru has a larger solar pipeline consisting of 14 projects that, when fully realized, aim to add a total of 2.5 gigawatts (GW) of capacity. This broader initiative reflects the country’s ongoing commitment to enhancing its renewable energy infrastructure.
Current and Future Capacity of Peru Solar Projects
As of now, Peru’s total installed solar capacity is estimated to be around 528 MW. The government’s targets suggest a strategic move to nearly triple this capacity, reaching approximately 3 GW by 2028. This growth trajectory aligns with global trends in renewable energy expansion.
Investment and Economic Implications of Peru Solar Projects
The planned investments and increased capacity are expected to bolster Peru’s energy security and support its transition to more sustainable energy resources. These developments also reflect a growing recognition of solar potential in Latin America, particularly in regions with favorable climatic conditions.
