Peru Chile Solar Link Project Overview
Peru is considering reviving negotiations with Chile for a US$550 million electricity interconnection project designed to import surplus Chilean solar and wind power while enabling two-way electricity exchanges. The proposed interconnection includes a 500-kilovolt transmission line between Montalvo in southern Peru and Kimal in northern Chile, with a capacity of up to 1,000 megawatts.
Peru Chile Solar Link Projected Benefits
The interconnection is expected to facilitate annual electricity exchanges ranging from 3,600 to 5,700 gigawatt-hours. Both countries could benefit economically, with anticipated annual gains totaling approximately US$170 million.
Peru Chile Solar Link Status of Negotiations
As of the current date, no final investment decision has been made, nor has a construction schedule been established. Technical, regulatory, and commercial agreements still need to be finalized before moving forward with the project.
Peru Chile Solar Link Significance of the Link
This project aims to enhance energy flexibility for both Peru and Chile by allowing Chile to export renewable energy surpluses from its solar-rich north. It will also provide Peru with an opportunity to balance electricity supply and demand efficiently.
