Shift to U.S. Solar Manufacturing
Canadian Solar is shifting its focus towards U.S. manufacturing amid financial struggles, expanding its cell and module production facilities in Indiana and Texas. The company reported a second-quarter net loss attributable to shareholders of $77 million, significantly wider than the profit recorded in the same period the previous year.
Expansion of U.S. Solar Manufacturing Capacity
The company has commenced operations at the first phase of its heterojunction (HJT) cell plant in Jeffersonville, Indiana, which it claims is the first commercial-scale HJT cell production facility in the United States. The facility is expected to reach a capacity of 6.3 gigawatts (GW) once Phase II is operational. Additionally, the module plant in Mesquite, Texas, has been expanded to a capacity of 10 GW from 5 GW.
Battery Storage Growth in U.S. Solar Manufacturing
In response to market demands, Canadian Solar is also focusing more on battery storage technology. The company’s battery energy-storage systems (BESS) division has seen a substantial backlog of $3.5 billion, with shipments up 73% year over year. This growth contrasts with the significant reduction in solar module shipments during the same quarter.
Strategic Rationale for U.S. Solar Manufacturing Shift
The decision to enhance U.S. manufacturing aligns with changing policy conditions and emerging domestic incentives, including the Section 45X production tax credit for solar technologies. These factors are driving Canadian Solar to reposition itself to better capitalize on potential growth in the North American market.
