Engie Brasil Energia SA has begun operations at the first plant of its 752 MW Assu Sol Photovoltaic (PV) Complex in Assu, Rio Grande do Norte.
With an installed capacity of 40.5 MW, this initial facility is part of a 16-solar-farm complex approved by Brazil’s National Power Sector Regulator, Aneel. Engie Brasil has invested BRL 3.3 billion (USD 539.8 million) in the project, which is expected to reach full commercial operation by the end of 2025.
A Major Boost for Brazil’s Renewable Energy Sector
The Assu Sol PV complex strengthens Brazil’s position as a clean energy leader and builds on Rio Grande do Norte’s vital role in the country’s renewable energy production. The project further cements the state’s status as a key hub for solar power.
Engie Brasil’s CEO, Eduardo Sattamini, emphasised the company’s commitment to sustainability, stating that the PV complex aligns with Engie’s renewable energy strategy. The company, which already holds over 11 GW of installed capacity, continues to expand its clean energy portfolio.
“The Assu Sol complex is a major step in our renewable energy expansion. By 2025, we will achieve full operation, reinforcing our leadership in Brazil’s clean energy transition,” Sattamini said.
To ensure high energy efficiency and minimise carbon emissions, Engie Brasil has incorporated advanced photovoltaic technology into the Assu Sol PV complex. The project comprises 16 solar parks with a total installed capacity of 752 MWac (895 MWp) and an average commercial capacity of 228.7 MW. All energy generated is allocated to the Free Market.
Strategic Execution and Economic Impact
The launch of the Assu Sol PV complex comes at a critical time, as Brazil continues to invest in solar power to diversify its energy mix. The country’s vast solar resources make large-scale PV projects like this one both attractive and essential for national energy security.
Engie Brasil’s CFO, Eduardo Takamori, highlighted the project’s timely completion, noting that the first plant became operational just 18 months after construction began in Q3 2023. The project has also created jobs in the construction and energy sectors.
Looking Ahead: Full Operation by 2025
Engie Brasil expects the full PV complex to be operational by 2025. With demand for clean energy on the rise, large-scale solar projects like Assu Sol are crucial to the country’s energy transition.
With approval from Aneel secured, additional sections of the PV complex will come online in the coming months. Engie remains focused on expanding its renewable energy footprint in Brazil, and the success of Assu Sol provides a strong foundation for future investments in solar power.
