Lagos Hospital Switches to Solar Power to Cut Bills

The Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) in Idi-Araba has adopted solar energy to ensure a consistent electricity supply amidst rising tariffs and unpaid government bills. This move underscores LUTH’s dedication to patient care and highlights the growing importance of renewable energy in Nigeria’s healthcare sector.

Escalating electricity tariffs from the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) have made it challenging for government agencies—including hospitals—to manage their power expenses.

According to The Nation, LUTH has been under significant financial strain due to high electricity costs, spending up to N150 million monthly on power while receiving only a N14 million government subsidy. Rising gas prices have also compromised its gas-powered hybrid energy system.

Overcoming the Challenges

To address these financial and infrastructural pressures, the hospital tested an alternative power source in Ward A. The system successfully provided 91.7% of the ward’s required electricity over one week, with the public supply covering the remaining 8.3%.

The hospital’s strategic plan for ensuring uninterrupted power includes immediate, intermediate, and long-term goals. As part of this plan, the Chief Medical Director (CMD) highlighted the use of advanced solar and inverter systems. As an immediate measure, TNL donated 30 fans to Ward A.

Professor Adeyemo announced that LUTH will also test a power solution in Block A following an audit, funded by the hospital’s internally generated revenue, and urged staff to prevent misuse of the new systems. Meanwhile, Femi Numa of Taranis Novus Limited confirmed the provision of a 20kw/40kwh solar energy solution to ensure continuous power for medical facilities.
