LUTH's choice to adopt solar energy stems from a complicated mix of financial and infrastructural difficulties experienced by federal health institutions in Nigeria. The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has raised electricity tariffs, making it challenging for government agencies, including hospitals, to manage their electricity expenses.
According to The Nation, LUTH has been under significant financial strain due to high electricity costs, spending up to N150 million monthly on power while receiving only a N14 million government subsidy. Rising gas prices have also compromised its gas-powered hybrid energy system.
Overcoming the Challenges
To address these challenges, the hospital tested an alternative power source at Ward A, which provided 91.7% of the required electricity over a week, with the remaining 8.3% from the public supply.
The hospital's strategic plan for uninterrupted power includes immediate, intermediate, and long-term goals. TNL donated 30 fans to Ward A. The CMD highlighted the use of advanced solar and inverter energy systems for reliable power.
Prof. Adeyemo announced that LUTH will test an alternative power solution in Block A after a power audit, funded by the hospital's internally generated revenue. Staff are urged to prevent misuse. Mr. Femi Numa of Taranis Novus Limited mentioned the provision of a 20kw/40kwh solar energy solution to ensure continuous power for medical facilities.
