Nestcon Bhd has solidified its position in Malaysia’s renewable energy sector by securing two key contracts to develop large-scale solar photovoltaic (LSSPV) plants in Sabah. The company’s wholly-owned subsidiary, Nestcon Infra Sdn Bhd, received two Letters of Notification from the Energy Commission of Sabah (ECoS) to proceed with projects totaling 18.99 MWac.
Nestcon Secures Contracts for 18.99MW Solar Plants in Sabah: Project Overview
The contracts encompass the development of two separate solar farms. The larger of the two is a 14.99 MWac facility planned for Bongawan, located in Kimanis on the state’s west coast. The second is a 4.00 MWac plant set to be constructed in Sri Tanjong, Tawau, on Sabah’s southeast coast. These projects are governed by a 25-year power purchase agreement (PPA), which mandates they achieve commercial operation to supply clean energy to the state’s grid.
Project Financing and Financial Outlook
Funding for the development will be sourced from a combination of Nestcon‘s internal capital and external bank borrowings. The long-term, 25-year PPA is expected to provide a stable and recurring revenue stream, positively impacting the company’s financial health. Nestcon anticipates that these projects will enhance its net assets, boost earnings per share, and improve its gearing ratio over the life of the agreement. Key conditions include finalizing financial closure within a set timeframe and submitting a commitment bond to ECoS to ensure timely project execution.
Contribution to Sabah’s Renewable Energy Goals
These contracts are part of a broader initiative by the Sabah state government to increase its renewable energy capacity. The Sabah Energy Council recently greenlit a total of 199MW in large-scale solar projects, with Nestcon and Coastal Contracts Bhd being among the first companies to publicly confirm their successful bids. This strategic push aligns with Malaysia’s national agenda to reduce carbon emissions and highlights a growing trend in regional clean energy investments, strengthening the state’s energy security through sustainable sources.
Future Projections
The successful execution of the Bongawan and Sri Tanjong solar plants will not only contribute significantly to Sabah’s clean energy targets but also reinforce Nestcon’s credentials as a capable developer in the competitive renewable energy space. By successfully delivering a combined capacity of nearly 19MW, the company is poised to play an important role in Malaysia’s transition towards a carbon-neutral future, while continuing to explore further opportunities in the expanding solar market.
