£7,500 Solar Panel System Installed at Oxfordshire Village Hall

Cherwell Council Grant Powers Community Sustainability

Bucknell Village Hall is bolstering its green credentials following the installation of a comprehensive solar power system, a project realized through a £7,533 grant from Cherwell District Council. The funding, sourced from the government’s Rural England Prosperity Fund (REPF), empowers the community hub to significantly reduce its reliance on the grid and champion local renewable energy generation.

The new installation features roof-mounted commercial solar panels coupled with a battery storage solution, a combination designed to maximize self-consumption. This setup is projected to generate approximately 3,964 kWh of clean electricity annually. By storing energy for use during periods of low sunlight, the hall ensures a consistent power supply, while any excess energy is exported to the National Grid, creating a potential income stream and supporting the wider energy network.

A Model for Rural Energy Independence

Councillor Lesley McLean, deputy leader of Cherwell District Council, highlighted the project’s strategic importance for community resilience. “These spaces provide venues for a wide range of activities,” she stated. “They are central to many villages and neighborhoods. We aim to help our communities become more sustainable and energy independent. Providing this REPF grant to Bucknell Village Hall is a step in that direction.”

The financial and environmental benefits are significant. John Kightley, the hall’s honorary treasurer and trustee, expressed his gratitude for the funding that made the upgrade possible. “The REPF grant has made this solar project a reality,” he said, noting that the new solar panel system enhances their existing infrastructure. “The new system complements our existing solar infrastructure, allowing us to maximize energy generation, lower emissions, and create additional income.” The savings on energy bills can now be reinvested into other vital community initiatives.

This initiative at Bucknell Village Hall serves as a powerful case study for how targeted funding can accelerate sustainability in rural areas. The successful integration of each solar panel and battery moves the community closer to energy independence and a smaller carbon footprint, demonstrating the positive impact of collaborative efforts between local government and community organizations.
