Spanish renewable energy leader ACCIONA Energia is expanding its footprint in the Dominican Republic through a new partnership with Grupo Pais. The joint venture will develop the Pedro Corto solar plant, a 63.35 MW project located in the province of San Juan de la Maguana. In the collaboration, ACCIONA Energía will hold a majority 51% stake, with Grupo País possessing the remaining 49%.
Scheduled to commence operations by the end of 2025, the Pedro Corto facility is underpinned by a 15-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with Edesur Dominicana, one of the nation’s three state-owned electricity distributors. To maximize efficiency, the plant will utilize advanced solar panels mounted on single-axis trackers, which follow the sun’s path to optimize energy capture throughout the day.
The project is projected to generate 189.07 GWh of clean energy annually, sufficient to meet the electricity needs of approximately 78,000 Dominican homes. This significant output will displace over 130,000 tons of CO2 emissions each year, an environmental impact comparable to taking 50,000 cars off the road. Furthermore, the development will be integrated into ACCIONA Energía’s Social Impact Management program, which dedicates a portion of annual revenue to local social, environmental, and educational initiatives to benefit the surrounding communities.
The Pedro Corto plant marks another key investment for ACCIONA Energía in the country, building on a growing portfolio. The company brought its first Dominican project, the 58 MWp Calabaza I plant, online in 2023. It is also advancing the construction of the large-scale 162 MW Cotoperí solar complex, which upon completion is set to become one of the most significant renewable energy facilities in the Caribbean and Central America.
