A pioneering 150 MW solar project in Western Australia’s Pilbara region has secured environmental approval, marking a significant milestone for the state’s renewable energy ambitions. The project, a joint venture between ACEN Australia and the Yindjibarndi Energy Corporation (YEC), is the first to be greenlit under the government’s new Green Energy Approvals Initiative, designed to fast-track clean energy developments.
ACEN and YEC Receive Approval for 150 MW Solar Project in Western Australia: A Landmark First for WA’s Green Energy Initiative
The Jinbi Solar Farm received its crucial environmental approval in mid-June 2024. Situated approximately 56 kilometers south of Karratha, the project will be constructed on unallocated crown land within the expansive 13,000-square-kilometre Yindjibarndi Native Title Determination Area. Once operational, its array of up to 325,000 tracking-mounted solar panels is expected to generate enough electricity to power around 40,000 homes annually.
Pioneering a 3 GW Renewable Vision in the Pilbara with ACEN and YEC Receive Approval for 150 MW Solar Project in Western Australia
This 150 MW solar farm represents the inaugural stage of a far more ambitious long-term strategy. YEC, a partnership between the Yindjibarndi Aboriginal Corporation and ACEN, envisions a 3 GW portfolio of solar, wind, and energy storage projects across Yindjibarndi land. The Jinbi project, which has an expected operational date in the second half of 2027, also includes plans for a future co-located battery energy storage system (BESS) to enhance grid stability.
Streamlining Approvals to Fuel a Clean Energy Future with ACEN and YEC Receive Approval for 150 MW Solar Project in Western Australia
The approval was expedited through the state’s Green Energy Approvals Initiative, a cross-departmental effort led by the Department of Water and Environmental Regulation. Climate Action Minister Reece Whitby emphasized the program’s goal of positioning Western Australia as a “renewable energy powerhouse.” He highlighted that streamlining regulatory processes is essential for decarbonizing the state’s energy systems, creating new jobs for Aboriginal Australians, and boosting renewable energy adoption in the resource-rich Pilbara region.
This initiative is critical for attracting investment not only in solar and wind but also in adjacent industries like green hydrogen, critical minerals processing, and the manufacturing of clean energy components. The successful approval of the Jinbi Solar Farm is a foundational step, demonstrating a clear pathway for large-scale renewable projects to advance and contribute to a sustainable energy transition.
