Rockefeller and Global Energy Alliance Invest $100M+ to Expand Africa electricity access
A significant new investment is set to accelerate the fight against energy poverty in Africa. The Rockefeller Foundation and the Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet (GEAPP) have announced a combined commitment of more than $100 million to expand electricity access across the continent. This landmark funding directly supports Mission 300, a transformative initiative aiming to connect 300 million Africans to reliable power by 2030.

The announcement, made at the Powering Africa Summit in Washington, D.C., marks a pivotal moment in the global effort to achieve universal energy access. The funding will bolster the Mission 300 initiative, a collaborative program led by the World Bank Group and the African Development Bank.
The financial commitment is a testament to a deepening partnership that began with an initial $10 million pledge in September 2024. The more than $100 million in funding to date is split between The Rockefeller Foundation, which contributes approximately 47% through its Mission 300 Accelerator and RF Catalytic Capital, and the Global Energy Alliance, which provides the remaining 53%.

Mission 300 employs a multifaceted strategy to tackle the complex challenge of electrification. With additional backing from partners like Sustainable Energy for All, Mission 300 is designed to drive economy-wide reforms and build robust investment programs that can deliver lasting change.

The impact of this collaborative effort is already tangible. To date, the initiative has successfully connected approximately 44 million people to electricity across Africa. The momentum is building, with ambitious plans to connect tens of millions more by the end of 2026.
