Lesotho Among 23 African Nations to Benefit from $100M+ Energy Initiative

In a significant boost for energy access across the continent, Lesotho has been named one of 23 African nations set to benefit from a major investment of over $100 million. The initiative, driven by the Rockefeller Foundation and the Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet (GEAPP), is designed to accelerate efforts to connect 300 million people in Africa to reliable electricity by 2030.

This substantial funding supports “Mission 300,” a critical partnership between the World Bank Group and the African Development Bank aimed at tackling energy poverty and fostering sustainable development.

A Coordinated Push for Electrification through the Africa energy initiative

The more than $100 million investment is not just about capital; it’s about creating a robust framework for success. The funds are earmarked for a multi-faceted approach that includes:

• Strengthening Governance: Establishing Compact Delivery and Monitoring Units (CDMUs) to assist governments in executing their energy access plans effectively.
• Supporting Renewable Energy: Bolstering distributed renewable energy programs, which are crucial for reaching remote and underserved communities.
• Fostering Economic Growth: Launching and expanding productive-use initiatives, such as the Productive Use Financing Facility (PUFF), to ensure that new energy connections translate into economic opportunities for individuals and small businesses.
• Promoting Clean Solutions: Advancing the adoption of clean cooking solutions to improve health outcomes and reduce environmental impact.
• Building Human Capital: Funding 18 “Mission 300” Fellowships to cultivate the next generation of energy sector leaders in Africa.
