Altech Expands Solar Distribution DRC: 5 Essential Solutions for Energy Poverty

Altech, the largest off-grid solar distributor in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), is accelerating its mission to eliminate energy poverty by 2030 through a significant expansion of its distribution network. Bolstered by key financial partnerships, the company is scaling its operations to deliver clean, reliable power to a nation where approximately 80 million people lack access to electricity. This strategic push centers on five essential solutions designed to empower off-grid households and businesses.

1. Accessible Solar Home Systems via Pay-As-You-Go

At the core of Altech’s strategy is its Pay-As-You-Go (PayGo) model, which makes solar home systems affordable for low-income families. Supported by investments from entities like SIMA Funds’ Emerging Distributor Finance Fund (EDFF) and Nithio’s FAIR facility, this model allows customers to make small, incremental payments for clean energy. A recent ÂŁ500,000 bond, which raised over $637,000 USD, is set to fund the distribution of an additional 1,225 solar home systems, directly replacing costly and hazardous energy sources like kerosene and diesel.

2. Widespread Distribution of Solar Lanterns

To provide an immediate and affordable entry point to clean energy, Altech is deploying thousands of solar lanterns. The same bond initiative will facilitate the distribution of 12,500 lanterns, offering a safe and sustainable lighting solution for families and small businesses, improving safety and extending productive hours for work and study.

3. Introduction of Clean Cookstoves

Addressing energy needs beyond electricity, Altech has successfully distributed over 25,000 clean cookstoves. This initiative reduces reliance on traditional biomass, mitigating indoor air pollution and its associated health risks while contributing to environmental preservation.

4. Building a Robust Last-Mile Distribution Network

Technology alone is not enough; reaching remote communities is critical. A cornerstone of Altech’s success is its expansive last-mile distribution network. Co-founders Washikala Malango and Iongwa Mashangao, who experienced energy poverty firsthand, built the company to serve these overlooked areas. New funding is enabling Altech to further strengthen this network, ensuring its life-changing products reach those who need them most.

5. Driving Local Economic Growth and Job Creation

Altech’s model is a powerful engine for local economic development. The company has already created over 4,500 jobs, and with recent financing, it projects the creation of 2,000 more. This commitment to local employment provides stable incomes and fosters economic resilience within the communities it serves. Altech’s demonstrated financial maturity, marked by its completed repayment to crowdfunded investors via Trine, reinforces its position as a reliable and growing enterprise. This focus on localized deployment ensures that global innovations in solar panel manufacturing translate into tangible benefits on the ground.

To date, Altech’s comprehensive approach has impacted over 2.25 million people, distributed more than 450,000 clean energy products, and saved customers an estimated $60 million. With plans to avert 550,000 tons of COâ‚‚ emissions, Altech is not just distributing solar products; it is building a sustainable future for the DRC.
