Angola Boosts Renewable Energy with 370 MW Solar Project
Angola has completed a major 370 MW solar power project, significantly boosting its renewable energy capacity. The initiative features seven solar power plants strategically located across the provinces of Benguela, Huambo, BiĂ©, and Luanda. With a combined capacity of 373 MWp (megawatt-peak), these plants will generate an estimated 940 GWh (gigawatt-hours) of clean energy annually, making a significant contribution to the nation’s clean energy transition. This project supports Angola’s broader goals of diversifying its energy mix and reducing reliance on fossil fuels. Further solar expansion is also planned, including an ambitious 800 MW project by 2025.
This major development complements other renewable energy initiatives in the country, such as the plan to build 65 solar mini-grids with a $1.6 billion grant. Together, these efforts highlight Angola’s commitment to a sustainable energy future. The distributed nature of the new solar plants, spanning multiple provinces, is also designed to improve energy access and reliability nationwide.
