Bahrain solar project: Stunning 3.7 MW Milestone Achieved

Yellow Door Energy, in partnership with The Avenues – Bahrain, has completed a landmark 3.7 MW solar project at the Avenues Mall, marking its first operational solar venture in the country. The installation is set to generate 5.6 million kWh of clean energy annually, powering one of the nation’s premier shopping destinations with sustainable energy.

Yellow Door Energy’s First Bahrain solar project

Yellow Door Energy has successfully commissioned a 3.7-megawatt (MW) solar power system at the Avenues Mall in Manama. This significant project involved the installation of over 6,400 high-efficiency solar panels across the mall’s parking areas, turning previously underutilized space into a source of clean power. The system is projected to generate 5.6 million kilowatt-hours (kWh) of renewable energy in its first year of operation.

Under a solar power purchase agreement (PPA), Yellow Door Energy financed, designed, constructed, and will operate and maintain the plant. This model allows The Avenues – Bahrain to benefit from reduced electricity costs and a lower carbon footprint without any upfront capital investment.

The project’s inauguration was attended by His Excellency Yasser bin Ibrahim Humaidan, Minister of Electricity and Water Affairs, who praised the initiative for meeting the highest technical standards.

Rory McCarthy, Chief Commercial Officer of Yellow Door Energy, expressed pride in the achievement. He stated, “Yellow Door Energy is proud to commission our first solar project in Bahrain and contribute to the Kingdom’s clean energy transition. With the solar system, The Avenues – Bahrain will benefit from clean solar power, lower electricity costs, and contribute to the Kingdom’s net-zero emissions target.”

Bahrain’s Renewable Energy Goals and the solar project

Bahrain is actively working to diversify its energy mix and increase its renewable energy capacity. The Kingdom has set ambitious targets, aiming for 5% of its energy to come from renewable sources by 2025, increasing to 20% by 2035 as part of its broader goal to achieve carbon neutrality by 2060.

The Avenues Mall project is a significant step towards these targets, demonstrating the viability of large-scale commercial solar installations. It joins a growing portfolio of national renewable initiatives, including the development of a 44 MW solar power project that has drawn competitive bids and the launch of the country’s inaugural utility-scale solar power project. By replacing a portion of its traditional energy consumption, the mall will significantly reduce its greenhouse gas emissions and operational costs.

Yellow Door Energy’s Commitment to the Bahrain solar project

Based in the UAE, Yellow Door Energy is a leading provider of sustainable energy solutions across the Middle East and South Asia. The company has a proven track record, with a developed portfolio of 400 MWp of solar projects. To date, these projects have generated over 1 billion kWh of clean energy, reducing carbon emissions by an estimated 400,000 metric tons.

The company’s footprint in the region continues to grow, with projects like the 5 MW solar project in Qatar showcasing its expanding influence. In Bahrain, Yellow Door Energy is already developing other major installations, most notably the groundbreaking Bahrain rooftop solar project with Foulath Holding, which is set to be the world’s largest of its kind.

The completion of the Avenues Mall solar project is a milestone for both Yellow Door Energy and Bahrain’s renewable energy sector. As the Kingdom continues to invest in a sustainable future, such partnerships will be crucial for achieving national and regional climate goals.
