Bangladesh renewable energy target set at 10,000 MW by 2030

Bangladesh’s 10,000 MW Renewable Energy Target Initiative

Bangladesh is pursuing a target of 10,000 MW of renewable energy, with solar power identified as the primary focus area. Recent discussions among energy officials indicate a preference to prioritize renewable generation over traditional fossil fuel-based power plants.

The chairman of the Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC) emphasized the urgency of avoiding new conventional power plants, stating that achieving the renewable energy target should take precedence. He called for a time-bound roadmap and a dedicated task force to monitor the implementation of these initiatives.

Policy support is being bolstered to facilitate this transition, including duty-free imports of renewable energy equipment and storage batteries. Plans also include expanding support for rooftop solar and enhancing grid integration, to better accommodate increased solar energy production.

In a related statement, Power Minister Iqbal Hassan Mahmood noted the government’s commitment to reducing reliance on fossil fuels. He reiterated the focus on renewable energy within the power sector, citing initiatives that include rooftop solar projects and grid-connected solar installations.

This strategic shift aligns with broader goals, as the government aims to reach a 20% renewable energy mix by 2030, according to recent reports.
