Bawumia Introduces Solar-Powered Outboard Motors to Fix Fuel Crisis in Ghana

In a significant move aimed at transforming Ghana’s artisanal fishing sector, Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has unveiled a government initiative to introduce solar-powered outboard motors. The announcement, made in late September 2024 during campaign events in Saltpond and Elmina in the Central Region, directly addresses the persistent challenges fisherfolk face with the supply and cost of premix fuel.

Addressing Chronic Fuel Challenges with Solar Power

For years, Ghana’s fishing communities have been hampered by chronic issues related to premix fuel, including frequent shortages, smuggling, and price volatility. Dr. Bawumia acknowledged that previous government interventions, such as automated fuel dispensing machines, failed to provide a lasting solution. This new plan seeks to permanently resolve these problems by transitioning away from fossil fuels entirely.

The proposed technology leverages renewable solar energy to power the outboard motors via rechargeable batteries. This innovation promises to liberate fishermen from their dependency on the unreliable premix fuel market, significantly reducing operational costs and eliminating the widespread corruption, locally known as “kululu,” that has plagued its distribution network.

Pilot Program and Community Engagement

To demonstrate the viability of this new technology, the government has slated a pilot program to begin in Elmina in October 2024. This initial phase will allow fisherfolk to gain firsthand experience with the solar-powered motors and understand their operational benefits.

“Before the end of this year, we will begin the pilot programme for solar-powered outboard motors,” Dr. Bawumia confirmed, emphasizing a hands-on approach. “We will show the fisherfolk how the motors operate, and they will no longer need to worry about buying premix fuel.”

The Vice President also committed to direct engagement with fishing communities in the coming weeks to discuss the plan’s details and ensure a smooth transition. By eliminating the need for premix fuel, the initiative is poised to create a more sustainable, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly future for Ghana’s fishing industry, improving livelihoods across the coast.
