Berbera Somaliland Solar Project: Powering the Future
Berbera is poised for a significant leap forward in its energy infrastructure, thanks to a new World Bank-funded initiative. The Somaliland Ministry of Energy and Minerals has officially signed a major contract to develop a 12-megawatt (MW) solar power project in the strategic port city. This development marks a crucial step towards providing sustainable and reliable electricity to the region’s residents and businesses.
The landmark agreement, signed on March 30, 2026, was announced by the Ministry of Energy and Minerals. The project’s foundation stone had been previously laid by Somaliland President Dr. Abdirahman Mohamed Abdillahi (Cirro), signaling strong governmental support for the transition to renewable energy.
Project Scope and Technical Details
This ambitious project is more than just a solar farm. It encompasses a comprehensive energy solution designed for stability and efficiency. The core components include:
- A 12MWp Solar PV Power Plant to harness the region’s abundant solar resources.
- A 36MWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), a critical element that will store excess energy generated during peak sunlight hours and release it during the night or on overcast days, ensuring a consistent power supply.
- 13.5 kilometers of power transmission lines to effectively distribute the generated electricity throughout Berbera.
This integrated approach aims to tackle the dual challenges of energy access and reliability head-on.
A Collaborative Effort for a Sustainable Future
The signing ceremony, held at the ministry’s headquarters, brought together key stakeholders dedicated to the project’s success. Attendees included Minister Eng. Ahmed Jama Barre, Director General Dr. Shucayb Osman Mahmoud, and other high-level officials from the Energy Commission and the Berbera electricity company.
Financed by the World Bank and implemented by the ministry, the initiative is a testament to the power of international partnerships in driving local development. The primary goal is to deliver affordable, dependable, and clean energy to the people of Berbera. By moving away from more expensive and less environmentally friendly energy sources, the project is expected to unlock significant socio-economic benefits, fostering economic growth and improving the quality of life for the city’s inhabitants.
As reported by the Somaliland Standard, this project represents a significant investment in Somaliland’s future, placing it on a path toward greater energy independence and a greener economy.
