Plans are advancing for a new 22.36 MW solar plant in Bileca, Bosnia and Herzegovina, spearheaded by the local company Metod Energija. The project, with an estimated value of 31.7 million marka ($17.6 million), marks another step in the nation’s expansion of its renewable energy portfolio.
Concession Tender Initiated for Bosnian Energy Firm Builds 22 MW Solar Plant
Following a self-initiated offer from Metod Energija, the Ministry of Energy and Mining of the Serb Republic has launched a public tender for the project’s concession rights. While the process is open to other bidders, Metod Energija holds an advantage, as the company is eligible for up to a 10% bonus in the bid evaluation for initiating the proposal. The successful bidder will be granted the concession for a period of up to 50 years.
The financial terms of the concession require the winning entity to pay a one-time fee of 951,014 marka for the development rights. In addition, a usage fee of 0.0055 marka will be levied for each kilowatt-hour (kWh) of electricity the plant generates, ensuring a long-term revenue stream for the entity.
Tapping into National Solar Potential
This project aligns with Bosnia and Herzegovina’s strategy to harness its considerable solar energy resources. The country benefits from an average of 1,500 kWh/m² in annual solar radiation and approximately 2,000 hours of sunlight per year, with southern regions like Herzegovina receiving up to 2,400 hours annually. This climate is highly conducive to efficient photovoltaic power generation.
A Growing Solar Landscape
The nation’s journey with solar power began in 2012 with a 120 kW plant in Kalesija. Since then, ambitions have scaled significantly. The Bileca facility is part of a larger pipeline of 180 planned solar projects across the country. While significant, the Metod Energija project is complemented by even larger-scale developments, such as the 125 MW Komanje Brdo solar plant, demonstrating the increasing investment in the country’s solar sector and advancements in photovoltaic technology.
