Chile solar energy: Stunning 29% generation milestone

Chile’s ascent as a global solar energy leader reached a new zenith in March, with photovoltaic (PV) power accounting for a staggering 28.7% of the nation’s total electricity generation. This significant milestone, detailed in a report from the generation trade association Generadoras de Chile, saw solar plants feed 2,141 GWh into the National Electric System (SEN), underscoring the country’s successful pivot towards a sustainable energy matrix.

The month was punctuated by remarkable moments of clean energy dominance. On March 14, solar power single-handedly met over 75% of Chile’s instantaneous electricity needs at noon, a testament to the immense generating capacity concentrated in areas like the Atacama Desert. The broader renewable sector also demonstrated its strength, supplying 62% of the SEN’s power for the entire month. This culminated in an extraordinary peak on March 1, when renewables briefly covered 92.6% of national demand.

This recent achievement is part of a consistent upward trend. For instance, data from December 2024 showed wind and solar combined had already broken records by surpassing 40% of the monthly electricity share for the first time, with solar making up 21% of that total. The leap to nearly 29% from solar alone just a few months later illustrates the accelerating pace of Chile’s energy transition.

However, this rapid expansion has introduced significant operational challenges, most notably energy curtailment. The grid’s capacity to absorb the massive influx of clean power is being tested, leading to the deliberate reduction of output. In March alone, approximately 595.8 GWh of potential renewable generation was wasted, with solar bearing the brunt at 430.3 GWh. This highlights an urgent need for infrastructure upgrades to handle the clean energy surplus.

In response, Chile is aggressively pursuing solutions to fortify its grid and future-proof its renewable ambitions. With nearly 12,000 MW of solar PV already online, the country has an additional 10,203 MW of new projects in the construction pipeline. Critically, a large portion of this new capacity is being developed with integrated energy storage systems. This strategic pairing of generation with batteries is essential for mitigating curtailment, enhancing grid flexibility, and ensuring that Chile can fully capitalize on its world-class renewable resources, as industry reports have detailed.
