China solar module efficiency set at 23.2% under new standards

New China Solar Module Efficiency Standards for Solar Modules

New mandatory national standards in China require TOPCon and heterojunction (HJT) solar modules to achieve a minimum conversion efficiency of 23.2%. These standards will take effect on January 1, 2027, following their issuance at the end of June 2026.

Key Details of the China Solar Module Efficiency Standards

The regulations outline specific requirements for performance, including a minimum rated power based on a standard size of 1134mm × 2382mm, which translates to 630W for modules meeting the efficiency threshold. Additionally, modules that fail to meet these efficiency requirements will be prohibited from commercial sale starting in 2027.

For back contact (BC) modules, a higher efficiency threshold of 23.5% has been established. Moreover, the new standards set bifaciality thresholds for various modules: TOPCon must achieve at least 75%, HJT must reach 85%, and BC must secure a minimum of 70%.

Environmental Impact Requirements for China Solar Module Efficiency

The new standards also stipulate that the maximum allowable stress-induced degradation for solar modules is set at 8.6%. This focus on durability is intended to ensure that solar modules not only meet efficiency criteria but also maintain performance over their operational life.

Official Standards Documentation for China Solar Module Efficiency

Three legally mandatory standards are now in place:

  1. GB47834-2026: Limit Values of Energy Efficiency and Energy Efficiency Grades for Crystalline Silicon PV Modules and Inverters.
  2. GB 47835-2026: Unit Product Energy Consumption Limits for Monocrystalline Silicon.
  3. GB 29447-2026: Unit Product Energy Consumption Limits for Polysilicon and Germanium.

These standards encompass the entire photovoltaic industrial chain, extending from polysilicon production to the fabrication of PV modules and inverters, and they carry legally binding enforcement.

Failure to comply with these new regulations will result in products being disallowed for manufacture, sale, import, or provision within China.
