MPC Energy Solutions has announced its exit from the Colombian solar market, selling its stakes in three solar projects to Prosolia Energy. The projects—Los Girasoles, Helios, and La Cabaña—are in the early stages of development and have a combined capacity of 65 MWp. The sale price was not disclosed.
MPC Refocuses Strategy with Colombian Solar Exit
MPC Energy Solutions’ decision to divest its Colombian solar assets is part of a strategic move to refocus on its core markets. The company has sold its shares and shareholder loans in three development-stage projects—Los Girasoles, Helios, and La Cabaña—to the Spanish renewable energy developer Prosolia Energy.
The agreement also includes MPC’s interest in the operational 12.3 MWp El Carmen solar plant, solidifying a complete withdrawal from the country’s solar market. The sale of El Carmen is expected to be finalized by the end of 2024. CEO Martin Vogt expressed confidence in the new owner, stating, “We are confident that the projects will be advanced towards construction and operation. We wish Prosolia the best of success in this endeavor.” The move comes amid projections for significant growth in the global solar market, with a stunning 34% surge expected in 2024, according to PV Knowhow.
Prosolia Energy Expands into Colombia with Solar Acquisition
For Prosolia Energy, a developer with over 20 years of experience and existing projects in Spain, Portugal, Italy, and France, this acquisition marks an expansion of its portfolio into Latin America. The addition of the 65 MWp Helios, La Cabaña, and Los Girasoles projects brings Prosolia’s global portfolio to over 1.8 GWp.
This move coincides with considerable growth in Colombia’s solar sector, a trend highlighted by PV Knowhow’s coverage of recent investments and project launches. The projects are projected to generate approximately 110,000 MWh of clean energy annually—enough to power 39,000 households—while preventing 23,000 tons of CO2 emissions each year.
This acquisition aligns with Prosolia’s commitment to sustainable development and reinforces its goal of becoming a key player in the Colombian renewable energy market. More information on the Colombian solar market is available from PV Knowhow. The growing importance of the region is further underscored by other large-scale projects, such as Enel Green Power’s recent launch of a 240 MWac solar plant.
