Community Solar Malaysia: 2 Amazing Projects Transforming Energy

Time dotCom Bhd has launched Malaysia’s first community solar project, featuring a 2.9-megawatt peak (MWp) solar photovoltaic (PV) system. The project is an initiative from Time Energy Sdn Bhd (TESB), a joint venture between Time dotCom and carbon neutrality expert NEFIN Group.

Community Solar Malaysia Project to Offset 2,800 Tonnes of CO2 Annually

Located at the Westlite-Dorms I and II in Senai, Johor, the project was developed in collaboration with Centurion Corporation. The system is expected to offset 2,800 tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) annually—an amount equivalent to the carbon sequestered by over 45,000 tree seedlings in ten years.

The project is part of the 10-year Community Solar Programme (MySuria) from the Ministry of Natural Resources, Environment and Climate Change (NRECC), which aims to promote renewable energy and reduce carbon emissions. This initiative mirrors progress seen in other parts of the world, such as Bhutan’s commissioning of its first solar power plant. For more information, refer to Bhutan’s solar energy revolution.

Under the MySuria community solar program, the government has allocated 100 MW for solar projects on residential, commercial, or industrial buildings, with the resulting electricity shared with the community. Time Energy Sdn Bhd (TESB) Chief Executive Officer Samuel Lee highlighted that this project will supply up to 50% of its generated electricity to 400 homes, while the remainder will power the Westlite-Dorms, according to Bernama.

TESB to Offer Comprehensive Renewable Energy Solutions

TESB will offer renewable energy solutions—including solar power, battery storage, and carbon offset services—to both businesses and consumers. The company’s goal is to make clean energy more accessible and affordable, helping clients reduce their carbon footprint and energy costs.

TESB plans to launch more solar projects across Malaysia, aiming for an installed capacity of 5 gigawatts (GW) by 2030. This ambitious plan reflects a broader regional trend toward solar technology, similar to the Maldives’ installation of 12 solar systems in the Thaa Atoll islands. The company is also exploring opportunities to expand its services into other markets in Southeast Asia, aiming to ensure the benefits of renewable energy are widespread and impactful.

Time dotCom’s Strategic Move into Renewable Energy

As a leading telecommunications provider in Malaysia offering fibre optic broadband, data centre solutions, and cloud services, Time dotCom’s entry into the renewable energy sector aligns with its mission to drive digital transformation and sustainability.

The launch of this community solar project marks a significant milestone for Malaysia’s renewable energy sector, showcasing the potential of community-driven initiatives to accelerate the country’s transition to clean energy.

As Malaysia continues to invest in renewable energy, projects like this one are expected to play a crucial role in achieving national climate goals and fostering a more sustainable future.
