Benin has taken a significant step forward in its renewable energy ambitions with the official commencement of construction for the new 25 MW Forsun photovoltaic (PV) plant. Located in the Plateau department’s Pobè commune, this project is the latest phase in the expansion of the Illoulofin Solar Power Station. Upon completion, the Forsun plant will elevate the station’s total generating capacity to a landmark 75 MW.
Construction of 25 MW Forsun PV Plant Commences in Benin: Project Overview
The Forsun PV plant represents the third and final 25 MW array planned for the Illoulofin site. It joins the initial 25 MW Defisol project, which was completed in 2022, and a second 25 MW plant developed by Toyota Tsusho (TTC) that is currently nearing completion. This strategic, phased expansion transforms the location into a major hub for solar power in the region. The project is backed by a substantial investment of approximately XOF 16 billion ($25.8 million), a collaborative funding effort between the Beninese government, the French Development Agency (AFD), and the European Union.
Driving Benin’s Energy Independence and Sustainability Goals
This development is a cornerstone of Benin’s strategy to diversify its power sources and reduce its reliance on imported fossil fuels. The government highlighted the project’s importance, stating, “This infrastructure enriches Benin’s energy mix with clean and renewable energy, aligning with sustainable development goals.” By investing in advanced solar solutions, Benin is not only bolstering its energy security but also fostering economic growth and creating a more resilient power grid for thousands of homes and businesses.
A Vision for a Greener Future in Benin
The expansion of the Illoulofin site underscores Benin’s commitment to global environmental targets and the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals, particularly those related to affordable energy and climate action. “With these projects and achievements, Benin continues to chart its path toward sustainable energy independence,” a government official noted. As a major investment in renewable power generation, the Forsun plant signals Benin’s potential as an attractive hub for foreign investment in West Africa’s green economy, paving the way for a more sustainable and prosperous future.
