Emerge, the joint venture between Masdar and EDF Group, has signed an agreement with Dubai Maritime City to develop a significant rooftop solar project. The partnership will see the installation of a 980kWp solar plant atop the staff accommodation building, marking a key step in the maritime hub’s commitment to renewable energy.
The project entails the deployment of over 1,700 solar modules, which are projected to offset approximately 780 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions each year. Under the terms of the agreement, Emerge will deliver a comprehensive, turnkey solution. This includes financing, design, procurement, construction, and the long-term operations and maintenance of the plant for a 25-year period, all provided at no upfront cost to Dubai Maritime City.
This solar initiative is a central component of the broader energy transition strategy of Dubai Maritime City’s parent company, DP World. The global logistics giant is pursuing ambitious decarbonization targets, aiming for carbon neutrality by 2040 and net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. Ahmed Al Hammadi, COO of Dubai Maritime City, emphasized the project’s role in this strategy. “A key component of our sustainability plan to achieve net zero carbon by 2050 and carbon neutrality by 2040 is the use of clean energy,” he stated. “We are eager to begin construction on this solar plant…and are thrilled to collaborate with forward-thinking businesses like Emerge and Masdar to expedite our shift to renewable energy sources.”
Michel Abi Saab, General Manager of Emerge, expressed pride in the new partnership. He noted that the project builds upon the company’s successful track record of developing solar assets across the United Arab Emirates. “Since Emerge was founded as an energy services company providing full turnkey solutions to clients at no upfront cost, we have successfully developed several projects in the UAE,” Saab said. “This agreement with Dubai Maritime City to install a rooftop solar plant builds on that success. We are honoured to back this initiative and make a major contribution to the decarbonisation objectives of Dubai Maritime City.”
The project also aligns with the UAE’s national climate ambitions. It supports the UAE Energy Strategy 2050, which targets a 44% contribution from renewable sources to the country’s clean energy mix. Furthermore, the increasing adoption of distributed generation, such as this rooftop installation, is consistent with projections from the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA). A REmap 2030 report from the agency forecasts that rooftop solar PV could potentially supply up to 6% of the UAE’s total power generation by the end of the decade.
