Encavis AG has broken ground on its largest solar project in Germany, a 114 MW solar farm in Borrentin, located in the Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania region. The development, a partnership with engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) specialist Belectric, marks a significant expansion of Encavis’s renewable energy footprint in its home market.
A groundbreaking ceremony attended by Borrentin’s mayor, Peter Rabe, and representatives from all project partners officially launched the construction phase. The Borrentin facility is set to deploy over 200,000 solar modules across a vast area comparable to 135 football fields. According to an official announcement, the project will generate approximately 119 GWh of clean energy annually. Mario Schirru, CIO/COO of Encavis AG, highlighted the project’s strategic value, stating, “We appreciate the excellent cooperation with Belectric, which brings us a significant step forward on the way to reaching the 7 GW generation capacity ambition in Europe by 2027.” Upon completion, the farm will boost Encavis’s total German generation capacity to nearly 700 MW.
The project is being constructed on land with an average soil rating of 27.26, classifying it as having low agricultural potential and thus avoiding conflicts over land use for food production. The clean electricity generated will be sold to Allego, a leading European electric vehicle charging network, under a ten-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA). This arrangement directly links new renewable generation with the growing e-mobility sector.
As the project owner and financier, Encavis is spearheading the development. Belectric is managing the construction and will oversee the farm’s operations and maintenance alongside Stern Energy, a firm that specializes in technical services for photovoltaic systems. This development aligns with Germany’s ambitious energy transition goals, which aim for renewables to constitute 80% of the energy mix by 2050. Projects like the Borrentin farm underscore the central role of large-scale solar photovoltaics in securing a sustainable energy future for Europe’s largest economy.
