Pioneering Green Initiatives: Enery Seals Virtual PPA with Šariš Brewery for Solar Energy
In a landmark move for Slovakia’s renewable energy sector, Šariš Brewery has entered into the nation’s first-ever virtual power purchase agreement (VPPA) with Austrian green energy provider Enery. This strategic 10-year partnership will supply the brewery with clean electricity starting in 2025, significantly advancing parent company Plzeňský Prazdroj’s ambitious goal of achieving carbon-neutral operations by 2030.
The agreement underpins the development of a new solar park in Iliašovce, Eastern Slovakia. Martin Grygařík, Sales Director of Plzeňský Prazdroj Slovensko, highlighted the project’s local impact, stating that Šariš Brewery is leading by example in supporting the construction of a Slovak solar plant through this long-term commitment. The green energy will power both the brewery and malthouse in Veľký Šariš.

Enery’s new solar facility, set to be operational within six months, will be built on an 8.8-hectare site. The plant will feature 10,582 photovoltaic modules, boasting an installed capacity of 6.3 MWp. Once connected to the grid, it is projected to generate approximately 7.2 GWh of clean electricity annually. This output is enough to cover about 92 percent of the brewery’s yearly power consumption.
This initiative represents a significant leap in the brewery’s sustainability journey. “For the last decade, we have been primarily focusing on reducing our energy consumption, which we have managed to cut by half,” explained Grzegorz Komora, Plant Manager at Šariš Brewery. “Now we are focusing on renewable sources.” This shift is expected to slash the brewery’s CO2 emissions by 1,386 tonnes annually, reducing the carbon footprint of its production by 18 percent.

The VPPA model offers a transparent and effective path to decarbonization. Ján Horváth, CEO of Enery Slovakia, described it as “the most transparent way to purchase green electricity,” as the brewery knows precisely where its power originates. While the solar park will feed electricity into the national grid, Šariš Brewery will draw an equivalent amount for its operations, ensuring its consumption is matched by renewable generation.
By 2025, the combination of this new VPPA and the brewery’s existing solar installation in Veľký Šariš will meet an impressive 98 percent of its electricity needs. The remaining 2 percent will be sourced with certificates of origin. Ivan Tučník, Sustainability Manager at Plzeňský Prazdroj, noted the broader benefits, stating that the agreement contributes to “reducing the carbon footprint of the entire Slovak electricity grid and increasing our country’s energy self-sufficiency.” This reliance on solar energy sets a new standard for corporate environmental responsibility in the region.
