Frontier SA Builds 30 Solar-Powered Boreholes in the DRC

Frontier SA is making a significant impact on living conditions in Sakania by providing 30 solar-powered boreholes to six local communities. This initiative addresses the critical need for clean water in the region and supports ERG Africa’s mission of sustainable development.

Solar-Powered Boreholes: A Game-Changer for Sakania

In the Sakania territory of Haut-Katanga province, Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Frontier SA—a subsidiary of ERG Africa—has taken a major step toward improving local living conditions. The company recently handed over 30 solar-powered boreholes to six communities, a transformative project that addresses the critical need for clean water access. This initiative aligns with ERG Africa’s mission to develop sustainable solutions that benefit local populations. Nicolas Treand, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of ERG Africa, emphasized the importance of this initiative, stating, “Supporting this initiative for improved access to drinking water aligns perfectly with ERG Africa’s mission to develop impactful projects that sustainably benefit local populations.”

Solar borehole installation

Frontier SA is improving life in Sakania, DRC, with 30 solar-powered boreholes that provide local communities with reliable access to clean water.

The solar-powered boreholes are expected to provide reliable and clean water to thousands of Sakania residents. By harnessing solar energy, these installations ensure a continuous water supply, even in remote areas where electricity is scarce. This initiative is not just about providing water; it is about enhancing the overall quality of life for people in these communities.

Empowering Communities Through Participation

A key aspect of the project has been the direct involvement of local communities in the decision-making process. Through DOT-Frontier, the company has ensured that residents have a voice in selecting projects that address their most pressing needs.

Patient Kabela, Senior Social Manager at Frontier SA, emphasized the importance of this citizen engagement. He said: “It is vital to address the most pressing community needs. By involving various local communities in the project selection process, we foster ownership and ensure the sustainability of achievements which are crucial for enduring benefits to current and future generations.”

The management of DOT-Frontier is designed to promote transparency and accountability. A specialized body comprising 12 members—representing local communities, grassroots organizations, government entities, and Frontier SA—oversees the fund. Regulatory supervision by the Ministries of Mines and Social Affairs further strengthens this governance framework, ensuring projects funded by DOT-Frontier align with national development priorities and are implemented transparently and accountably.

A Positive Impact on Sakania’s Future

The handover of the 30 solar-powered boreholes marks a significant achievement for Frontier SA and the communities of Sakania. This initiative is expected to have a lasting impact, giving thousands of people reliable access to clean water. Eric Kitambala Mabel, President of DOT-Frontier, highlighted the positive relationship between the organizations. He commented, “The relationship between DOT-Frontier and Frontier SA is positive, with the latter fulfilling its commitments and obligations.”

As Frontier SA continues to invest in community development projects, the future looks bright for the residents of Sakania. The solar-powered boreholes are just one example of how the company is working to improve quality of life and ensure access to basic necessities that many take for granted.

This solar-powered boreholes project is a testament to Frontier SA’s commitment to sustainable development and corporate social responsibility. By investing in initiatives that address the most pressing needs of local communities, the company is making a positive impact on the lives of thousands of people in Sakania and beyond.
