The nation’s ambitious plan to establish a 24-hour economy is being supercharged by a landmark initiative to inject 2,000 megawatts (MW) of renewable energy into the national grid. This strategic move aims to provide the stable, affordable, and sustainable power necessary to drive round-the-clock industrial and commercial activity.
A recently signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) solidifies this vision, marking a critical first step towards a greener and more prosperous future. The agreement between the 24-Hour Economy and Accelerated Export Development Secretariat and ATRI Energy Transition Private Limited paves the way for the development of this significant energy capacity over the next five years.

The success of a 24-hour economy hinges on a reliable and cost-effective electricity supply. This new initiative directly addresses this need by diversifying Ghana’s energy mix with a powerful combination of solar generation, advanced battery energy storage systems, and innovative biomass-to-power ventures.
This 2,000 MW project is not just about adding power; it’s about providing the right kind of power. By integrating battery storage, the plan ensures a consistent electricity supply even when the sun isn’t shining, tackling the intermittency often associated with renewables. This reliability is crucial for sectors like manufacturing, mining, agro-processing, logistics, and data centers to operate continuously and compete on a global scale.
The collaboration will be executed through a special purpose vehicle known as PAX Energy, involving key national stakeholders. The Ministry of Energy, GRIDCo, the Volta River Authority (VRA), the Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo), the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), and the Energy Commission are all slated to play roles in ensuring seamless grid integration and project success.

Beyond strengthening the national grid, this renewable energy plan is a powerful engine for job creation and economic empowerment. The project is expected to generate between 160,000 and 165,000 direct and indirect jobs, providing a significant boost to local economies and creating new opportunities for skilled workers.

The goal is to cap electricity tariffs at an impressively low 7 cents per kilowatt-hour with battery storage, and between 4-5 cents without. Such competitive pricing will lower operational costs for businesses, enhance productivity, and stimulate exports.
Furthermore, the partnership includes a vital component for local capacity building. A collaboration with the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) will facilitate technology transfer and adaptation, ensuring that Ghana not only consumes clean energy but also develops the local expertise to innovate within the sector.
